King Cobra Sword

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

I forged this sword from a single piece of rebar. I have been reading up about swords for a while now and after watching a program on the king cobra, I was inspired to forge a sword with a king cobra motif.

I left the rebar grooved pattern the handle on purpose for extra grip.  The snake part that also forms the guard and quillion is 55cm long and is shaped in a stirrup type fashion. I also managed to forge the quillon into a cobra head shape.

I grinded a fuller into the blade and blackened the whole thing…because the king cobra is black.

Pretty cool sword and just as dangerous and deadly as the animal itself. :-)

5160 Scimitar

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

I forged the blade of the Scimitar from a 5160 leave spring…it took my quite a long time doing it by hand because it is such a huge blade.

Everything from the grinding, polishing, hardening and tempering and everthing in between was also quite a mission because I was used to work with knife blades.  The process bascially stays the same but is just performed in larger scale.

I wanted the sheath to have a kind of rustic look and I think I did capture the look with the steel rings.  The guard of the blade is made of steel and it has brass spacers a leather wrapped wooden handle and a steel pommel all fastened and held together with a decorative bolt and nut.
